Felony theft charge leads to mayor's recall election and job loss

People who hold certain positions are in control of large amounts of money and assets of corporations, municipalities and other entities. These people are in a trusted position and must ensure they properly care for the things they are controlling. When dishonesty occurs or assets come up missing, it is possible that the person in charge of them will face criminal charges. That is what happened in the Town of Superior.

Back in December 2015, a town clerk reported that the mayor of the town had made cash withdrawals from his town-issued bank card that weren't authorized. That employee was fired shortly after with the mayor's vote being the deciding factor. The town manager and the town financial director resigned that same month.

In January of this year, it was found that the mayor had eight ATM withdrawal transactions totaling $2,300 during 2013 and 2014. While the mayor did pay that money back after the audit, a recall petition was started. An election regarding the recall is scheduled for the end of August.

Now, the mayor is facing a felony charge for the theft. The mayor, who was also the Pinal County Sheriff's Office jail commander, not only faces that recall election and criminal charge, he has also lost his job at the jail. He's been on paid administrative reassignment since town officials let the department know in February that allegations about the theft were forwarded to the attorney general's office. The mayor's upcoming court date is set for Aug. 4 in the Superior Court of Arizona in Phoenix.

Felony charges of any sort can have a huge impact on your life. Losing your job, having difficulty finding a new job and other effects are possible. Fighting back against the charges with your defense might help to minimize the effects.
