Murder charges for Arizona man after chilling 911 call

A recent story out of Coconino County is one of great tragedy. A call to 911 around midmorning on a Saturday ended with one person being killed and another arrested. The caller said he shot his longtime girlfriend. When officers from nearby Yavapai County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety arrived at the home, the woman was already deceased.

The 71-year-old man who called 911 allegedly confessed to killing the 62-year-old woman when officers arrived. He remained at the home, where he was detained by officers. The suspected murder weapon was recovered, as was 20 pounds of marijuana considered to be high grade.

Authorities say that there didn't seem to be a history of domestic violence at the home during the couple's more-than-30 year relationship. It is still unknown why the man shot the woman, as he hasn't yet told officers the reason. A spokesperson for the Coconino County Sheriff's Office says that there didn't appear to be a struggle in the home.

While the investigation is still going on, the man has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in the county's detention facility. His bond is set at $1 million.

The charge against this man is serious. Not only does he have to live knowing that he killed his longtime girlfriend, he now has to deal with the criminal justice system. Despite the severity of the crime, this man has just as much right to defend himself against the charges as any other defendant in the state of Arizona. Knowing his rights and learning about his charge might help him to determine how he should respond to the charges.
